Mental Health in construction matters

This week, our Director, Will Marshall published an article about the importance of speaking about mental health right now.

With COVID-19 lockdowns, industry restrictions and working from home, it’s important that the construction industry continues the conversation about mental health and the safety risk it poses to the sector.

In Australia, every second day a construction worker loses their life to suicide. This means construction industry workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than a workplace incident. Factors such as transient work, poor work/life balance and a lack of social support are all contributors to poor mental health in this industry. And when we look at how our lives change during lockdown, it’s clear to see how the new stay-at-home and construction industry orders can exacerbate these issues.

The article also contains some outstanding resources to get help and improve your mental health through organisations such as Black Dog Institute, Beyond Blue and Lifeline.
